Reuse-A-Shoe
is a program implemented as one of Nike's long-term commitments
to waste elimination. This program helps to close the loop on the
life cycle of literally millions of pairs of old, worn-out or otherwise
unusable athletic shoe material. To date, the City of Lansing, along
with the efforts of Eaton, Ingham and Clinton Counties have collected
over 15,000 pairs of shoes for Nike's Athletic Shoe recycling program.
These shoes are sent to a facility where the various layers of the
shoe are ground down and made into new sports arena/courts surfaces
as well as playground surfacing.
The City of Lansing
also received a $20,000 grant from this program and is utilizing
it to surface a playground area at Potter Park Zoo.
