In 1972 the Michigan Legislature gave authority to counties to facilitate a County-wide Animal Control Agency. The Department's main responsibility is to enforce the Dog Law Act, which includes;
- licensing;
- inspecting kennels;
- investigating loose animals;
- investigating animal bites and neglect;
- handling of lost and found pets;
- responding to complaint calls about animals running-at-large;
- facilitating adoption;
- conducting dog census;
- maintaining the shelter.
